Wegbeschreibung
Prof. Mark Hannam, School of Physics & Astronomy, Cardiff University
Gravitational waves provide an entirely new way to observe the universe. For thousands of years our only information from beyond Earth came via electromagnetic waves – light, x-rays, gamma-rays, radio waves. With each new class of telescope, our understanding of Nature was transformed. With gravitational waves we can now *listen* to the most violent events in the cosmos, like collisions of black holes, and to the earliest moments of the Big Bang. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for the first gravitational-wave detections in 2015, and more discoveries are on the way. All of these rely on state-of-the-art precision engineering, and vast computing power. I will talk about the discoveries we have made so far, the amazing science in the years ahead, and the huge computing challenges in making this happen.
